This is a two-day (or modular) course with the focus on the developing advanced skills in managing deteriorating patient and cardiac arrest. The course is designed for healthcare professionals with who would be expected to apply those skills taught as part of their clinical duties, or to teach them on a regular basis. Every year many thousands of people from refugee backgrounds settle in Australia. They come from locations where they may have endured conflict, persecution and dislocation from the homes, families and culture. Whilst many refugees will have similar health concerns to their Australian - born counterparts, they may also have issues specific to their country of origin and their migration and settlement experience. General practice and primary health has a key role to play in undertaking post-arrival health assessments and providing ongoing care. This workshop aims to provide basic information and skills to assist in this process.

Chronic diseases are major contributors to the mortality gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and other Australians. The major contributors are heart disease, diabetes, liver diseases, chronic lower respiratory disease, cerebrovascular diseases and cancer. Many of these diseases are associated with a range of inter-related factors that are common to more than one disease. This interactive case-based workshop offers participants opportunity to better understand best practice in managing these illnesses in Aboriginal people and to develop a greater appreciation of the other factors impacting Aboriginal health and treatment of chronic disease.

A one-day course aimed at providing the candidate with the skills and knowledge to manage the patient in the immediate period of crisis. It includes the recognition, assessment, and immediate management of the deteriorating patient. Candidates are sent a manual at least two weeks prior to the course to commence preparation for the face-to-face component. This includes those skills for dealing with a cardiac arrest or other medical emergencies in a clinical setting.
