The aim of this 6.5hour training is to provide GP participants with the knowledge and skills to assess, treat, plan and review mental health issues affecting men commonly presenting to general practice. Successfully completing the training enables GP participants to carry out Mental Health Assessment and Treatment Planning.

This course is made up of 3 segments:
1) A self-paced highly interactive online program with 5 modules [including Mental Health Care in Australia (including Medicare Items); Mental Health Disorders affecting Men; and Assessment & Diagnosis] (3 hrs).
2) A Zoom Webinar with Consumer & Carer Representatives (1 hr)
3) A Zoom Webinar on Management with Dr Cate Howell OAM, incorporating interactive activities [the Mental Health Assessment and Treatment Plan, psycho-education and lifestyle; psychological approaches and medication; referral pathways and resources] (2.5 hrs)


Accredited with the GPMHSC as Mental Health Skills Training and MH CPD.

Learning Outcomes

Determine appropriate MBS items to utilise in relation to mental health care.
Describe the most common mental health issues affecting men in the Australian community.
Differentiate various assessment strategies for men (including risk-assessment) presenting with mental health concerns.
Generate an evidence-based and needs-based GP mental health treatment plan, in consultation with consumers and carers.

Dr Rosanne Skalicky

Rural Generalist in Critical Care, Royal Flying Doctors SA

Dr Skalicky (often referred to as ‘Dr Rose’), is a senior Emergency Physician with extensive national and international experience. Having worked as an emergency physician in Tasmania, Queensland, and South Australia (RAH), Dr Rose headed overseas in 2009. With a passion for equitable access to healthcare and international development in EM, Dr Rose has spent the last decade working overseas in a fulltime capacity – remote NW Tanzania and most recently in Myanmar. In Myanmar, Dr Rose worked under the Ministry of Health developing acute emergency services and training nationally, which included a full-time teaching and clinical load. Having returned to Australia in early 2021 Dr Rose is currently employed by the RFDS as a Rural Generalist in Critical Care, working primarily out of Port Augusta.

Dr Roses’ professional interests include:

·Improving equity in health access
·Health care development of EM in low-middle income countries
·Capacity building of Health staff

When not at work Dr Rose enjoys caring for her family, reading, craft, and obviously seeing new places, and engaging with people from different cultures.
